End of Year SMARTR Outcome

100% of students in grades 3-6 will compose another 4-5 paragraph personal narrative that will be scored using the FCPS narrative rubrics for style and mechanics/usage. Overall grade level student performance will have increased 20% over the quarter 1 narratives.

Strategy 1 – Pedagogical Development

  • Literacy teacher will visit grade level teams to discuss anchor papers and rubrics. Teams will assess writing samples from their classes.
  • Professional development for implementation writer’s workshop.
  • Common look-fors developed at vertical team meetings.
  • 5th-grade teachers will participate in a graduate study with George Mason University regarding the use of technology enhanced graphic organizers to increase student achievement. Information learned will be shared with staff.

Strategy 2 - Writing Rigor

  • Students will edit their writing with their peers and use the feedback to adapt ideas and persist in accomplishing difficult tasks.
  • Students will be expected to persist in drafting, editing, and rewriting their work.
  • Students will participate in Write-a-Palooza, a half day of writing, where students go through the entire writing process.

End of Year SMARTR Outcome

By June 2017, 100% of students in grades 3-6 will have participated in at least 2 team-created PBL units. Teachers will have assessed the 2 nd PBL presentations using the FCPS presentation rubric. Overall grade level student performance will have increased 20% over the 1st PBL unit.

Strategy 1 – Pedagogical Development

  • Staff will participate in professional development by an expert in designing PBL units.
  • Grade levels will work in collaborative teams to develop at least 2 new PBL units, following the strategies included in “PBL in the Elementary Grades”.
  • Staff will participate in professional development regarding classroom management during PBL, such as SCRUM.

Strategy 2 - Develop 21st Century Skills

  • Students will use the library and innovation lab to sharpen technology skills and the use of contemporary digital skills with practice and direct instruction from teachers, the school librarian, and AART.
  • School counseling lessons on collaboration and communication skills.
  • Students will view successful presentations from the previous year and set goals for informing, influencing, motivating, and/or entertaining their audiences.
